Volunteers lend a helping hand to improve native habitat at Peters Canyon Regional Park. Each month, park staff and volunteers dedicate a morning to seasonally appropriate restoration, such as planting and watering native shrubs and removing invasive weeds.

Lahaina Fire - Maui, Hawaii

(Updated 2/13/2025) The Lahaina fire in Maui, Hawaii in August 2023 was a deadly wildfire that destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and killed at least 102 people. It was the deadliest wildfire in the United States in over a century.

The path to full recovery remains long. As of August 2024, many residents are still grappling with displacement and the loss of their homes. While significant strides have been made in Lahaina's recovery, the community continues to face numerous challenges as it rebuilds and addresses deeper systemic issues.
