Volunteers lend a helping hand to improve native habitat at Peters Canyon Regional Park. Each month, park staff and volunteers dedicate a morning to seasonally appropriate restoration, such as planting and watering native shrubs and removing invasive weeds.
Palisades Fire - Los Angeles, California
In August 2025, 237 building permits were issued in the Pacific Palisades, compared with 92 in April, when the post-fire work was just beginning. As of September, more building permits were issued in the Palisades in the past 3 months than for any other neighborhood in the city, according to data from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. (Updated 10/11/2025) The Lahaina fire in Maui, Hawaii in August 2023 was a deadly wildfire that destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and killed at least 102 people. It was the deadliest wildfire in the United States in over a century.
The path to full recovery remains long. Two years after the fire, many residents are still grappling with displacement and the loss of their homes. While significant strides have been made in Lahaina's recovery, the community continues to face numerous challenges as it rebuilds and addresses deeper systemic issues.
